Auntie Sis
"Auntie Sis" was my grandfather's aunt who raised him as a child. She was a great cook.
I remember many backyard BBQ's at her home in Bakersfield when I was a kid. Watermelon in the back porch sink, blocks of ice with ice picks... Running through sprinklers... It was a fun time to be young!
- 2 cups brown sugar - packed tight
- 2 cups hot water
- 2 tablespoos lard or other shortening
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Any amount of raisins and nuts chopped pretty fine
- Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, (allspice)
(optional) boil the raisins, nuts, and spices together for 5-6 minutes. (cool)
Then add 3 level cups of flour and 1 level tablespoon of soda sifted with the flour.
Bake at 350° until done.
Auntie's note on back:
I think I always added 1 or 2 eggs and beat into mixture. It's been so long since I made one of these I just about forget, but am almost sure I added eggs.
